As Mother’s Day is celebrated this Sunday, May 8th, I thought it appropriate to share how important our mothers have been to us. For many, our mothers aren’t here any longer. This holiday then reminds us of their relevance in our lives.
Mother’s Day isn’t the same without my mother. Her engaging spirit was enjoyable, and she was the consummate hostess for any event. She gave me counsel when asked and agape (unconditional) love for the fifty-five years of my life.
Often we fail to realize how much someone truly means to us until they are gone – out of our lives forever. I continue to miss my mother’s:
- Smell - loved the perfume she wore.
- Cooking - delicious food, especially my favorite dessert – cherry cream pie.
- Hugs – the way it made me feel when she hugged me - protected and loved.
- Counsel – if I needed help resolving a problem, her experiences and knowledge allowed her to assist with the right words that made sense to me - wise and compassionate words.
If it weren’t for our mothers, we wouldn’t be here. I realize some people don’t get along with their mothers, and I know some mothers aren’t compassionate or understanding. Most mothers try their best to learn from their mothers and do the best they can to raise their children.
An event that comes to mind - when my Mother was my rock when I desperately needed her strength happened when my daughter, 12 at the time, had an emergency appendectomy. We rushed my daughter to Children’s Hospital at 10:00 p.m. My Mother drove herself across town to support and encourage us, guiding us through the unknowns.
I attribute many of my positive character traits to my mother. A constantly positive role model, despite our challenges of moving. I miss her infinitely. She battled lung cancer for over three years before going to be with the Lord. Her resilience and perseverance shall undoubtedly be my goal.
