Tomorrow, February 17, 2023, has been designated as Random Acts of Kindness Day. When my oldest daughter entered fifth grade in Denver, Colorado, her teacher emphasized the positive act of random kindness to others. I assisted in the classroom and was impressed at how the students, ages 10 and 11, practiced it with their classmates. The teacher also made time each Friday morning to share their kindness with the other students. She also had the students design a notebook and insert the random acts they performed during the year so that they could reference it in the coming years.
A bit of history on the subject - it first originated in 1995 in Denver, Colorado. The act culminates in good feelings and brightens someone’s day.
Do you already practice random kindness acts, or would you like the suggestions below?
- Show kindness to your server in the restaurant;
- Visit a lonely friend or neighbor;
- Celebrate a judgment-free day;
- Thank a teacher;
- Smile;
- Open the door for someone;
- Help a senior tidy up their property or home;
- Write a thank you note;
- Donate blood;
- Leave a generous tip;
- Write a note to your grandparents;
- Pick up trash;
- Be polite when driving; and
- Write special messages on sticky notes and leave them for others to find.
These are just a few ideas to show random acts of kindness. I’ve also included a few websites full of unique things to do.
