A Grandparent’s Checklist

As we eagerly await the arrival of our first grandchild, expected within the next month, I realized the crucial role we, as grandparents, play in their lives. Over the past eight months, I've been praying for my daughter and her child and that my husband and I will be the best grandparents we can be.

My goal is a smooth start to this new family dynamic, so I thought it essential to research as much as possible.  After all, things have significantly changed since I raised my children in the 1980s and 90s. Below are a few of those changes my daughter has informed me of.

1.             Nothing in the crib with the baby.

2.             Put the baby on their back to sleep.

3.             Anyone wishing to see the baby soon after birth must first get their TDAP shot.

4.             The baby should remain in a bassinet in the parent's bedroom for six months after birth.

One of life's most cherished relationships is that of a grandparent and grandchild. However, it's crucial to maintain a delicate balance when dealing with new parents who are often exhausted and overwhelmed.

1.     Skip comparisons to other parents and children.  This only hurts feelings.

2.     To win affection – don’t spoil.

3.     Give the new parents space.  They will call, and you will answer their questions.

4.     Don’t visit without being invited to the home.

5.     Keep your shopping urges under control.  The parents will get what they want and need for their new baby.

6.     Respect health concerns.  Get the shots requested.  And wash your hands before holding the baby.

7.     Encourage open and honest conversation.  Ask permission before you try new things with the baby.

We don’t have a looking glass into the future, but we should strive to remain calm.  Children, especially infants, pick up on the stress and anxiety that flows through your body, resulting in restlessness and uneasiness.

I think it's essential to let bonding happen naturally.  I will do my best not to advise unless asked and work hard to go with the flow.

But in the meantime, I hope you have a lovely last week or two of your summer vacation.

All my best,

Julie
