When in school and asked to journal, I was always less than thrilled at the assignment. But now that I’m mature (okay older!) I believe Journaling is one of the most important things we can do, both for ourselves and our heirs. First, it allows us to look at the happenings of the day in retrospect. You can ask yourself if you should have done something differently, or perhaps apologize for something we said or did, or just to get a synopsis of what happened that day in our little world.
As I look back at the 45 different places I lived and all the special people I met, I regret not journaling more. I did have a diary or two, which has helped remind me of certain events, but if you get in the habit of Journaling, you can often resolve issues or see things from a different point.
Letter writing can often do the same. While living in Denver, my neighbor Diane, an accomplished author who encouraged me to write my memoir, and I attended an author’s talk at a well-established bookstore. Inspired by actual letters, author Micaela Gilchrist wrote “The Good Journey,” categorized as romantic, historical fiction. She found the letters wrapped in a ribbon at an estate sale, if I remember her story correctly.

While sifting through a large tote full of pictures and papers of my father’s, I recently came across about ten letters from my father to my mother when he was working in Alaska before he married my mother in 1957. He was always a comedian, and it was apparent in his letters too.
So, if you haven’t been Journaling, place a small notebook and pen on your nightstand, and before closing your eyes, write down a few words or statements to remember your day. Maybe starting with a bullet journal would be the best option for you. I’ve made a tab for Journaling in my Pinterest account.
