While we broach the subject of gatherings, let’s also remember that we need patience to minimize conflict between children and adults. We must teach our children that competition is good, but only one person or team can usually win. It is also essential to teach our children to be good losers as well as good winners. You don’t feel as sad and upset about losing when you cheer on and congratulate the winner. My mother taught me that the most important thing was being positive no matter the game’s results.
Be proactive. Speak with your family to prevent any problems or disagreements ahead of time. If you know there will be issues, remind them you will be watching and expect them to be on their best behavior. You might even talk about a reward if the day goes well.
Fun gatherings are what we tend to remember as we mature. Tell one another how much you care about them, how much you appreciate all their efforts to have the gathering, and how great it was to see them again.
Have a fun summer!
All my best,
Julie
