12 Ideas for a Spooktacular Halloween

While driving through my neighborhood this morning, I saw the most frightful yard decorations I think I have ever laid eyes on.  The two scary figures in the front yard of a corner home were startling yet magnificently standing at least twelve feet tall.  I am attaching a picture I snapped from my vehicle.

Haunting, though impressive at the sheer size of these figures, my husband commented how scary it would be for the tiny trick-or-treaters.  Yet I had the opposite thought - how fantastic for the older children.  Do you like decorating to be scary or enjoy the Fall pumpkin adornment?  I guess you would say I enjoy the latter.

Growing up in the 60s and 70s, we had the scare of sharp objects being inserted into homemade food like popcorn balls and cupcakes.  Our parents thoroughly investigated all candy and goodies before we could ingest even one piece. It was hard to be patient.

I want to share a few ideas to make Halloween fun for you, your family, and your friends.

  1. Paint your pumpkins instead of carving them up
  2. Put on a fashion Halloween costume show
  3. Make s’mores
  4. Host a wine and candy-tasting party
  5. Host a themed binge-watch. For example:
    • Haunted Houses and Ghosts: The Shining, Ghostbusters, The Conjuring, Poltergeist
    • Witches: Hocus Pocus, Charmed, The Craft, I Married a Witch
    • Zombies: The Walking Dead, World War Z, Night of the Living Dead, Zombieland
    • Vampires: Dracula, Lost Boys, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Interview with the Vampire
    • Serial Killers and Slashers: Psycho, Halloween, Scream, Texas Chainsaw Massacre
  6. Find a hayride and bob for apples
  7. Build a haunted gingerbread house
  8. Find a corn maze to wander through
  9. Participate in a trunk or treat competition
  10. Venture out for a ghost tour.
  11. Make pumpkin crafts
  12. Find a painting studio to gather friends and paint a masterpiece

Below are websites with plenty of ideas and information regarding Halloween that I included for your convenience.

As the Halloween parties begin to ramp up, please remember to be extra careful when driving in our neighborhoods and check all the candy and gifts before allowing your children to partake.

Happy Haunting!

All my best,

Julie
